    Position Focus: 
    The Printing Assistant 2 position is a multifunctional position that serves a variety of roles at Yale Printing & Publishing Services (YPPS), including, but not limited to:

    Scanning and Digitization: Supports the digitization of paper documents through image and OCR conversion, ensures quality control of images and indexing fields for retention on network and local drives. Manual Finishing: Performs tasks such as cutting, folding, binding, and assembling printed materials by hand to ensure quality and precision. Use of manual equipment as needed. Auto Finishing: Operates various finishing machines including folders, collators, staplers, booklet-maker, paper cutters, perforators, and binders including comb, coil, and perfect binding machines. Digital Presses & Wide Format Operation: Assists with the setup and operation of digital printing equipment, and wide format printers maintaining quality control throughout the printing process. Collaboration and Support: Works with team members to meet deadlines, assists with troubleshooting, and maintains a clean and organized workspace.

    Position Overview:

    The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, seeks a strategic, dynamic leader with the vision to helm its Printing & Mail Services department. Ideal candidates will have a proven track record of financial and operational success managing a large and dedicated team. While direct experience in the commercial printing sector is highly preferred, we welcome applications from candidates with substantial experience in related fields that demonstrate transferable skills and achievements in large-scale service management.

    The Director will oversee a department with an annual budget of approximately $4 million, managing a team of more than 40 employees within a well-equipped print shop. The print shop is equipped with digital and off-set capabilities (specifically: KM-1e ink jet press, embellishment enhancements/capabilities, wide format printing), supporting a diverse range of printing and mail services for the university. Convenience Copy, mail, and passport services are other significant features within the department. This role demands a leader capable of effectively managing these resources to meet the growing demands of a rapidly expanding campus.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement the strategic vision for Printing & Mail Services, aligning departmental goals with the university's broader objectives. Oversee job scheduling, personnel management, equipment procurement, and related.

    • Operational Excellence: Manage all aspects of departmental operations, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness. Continuously evaluate and refine departmental processes and reporting structures to adapt to the university’s growth and evolving needs.

    • Financial Stewardship: Monitor and manage the department’s financial performance. • Review financial reports, adjust cost models, and implement strategies to manage expenses. Identify and pursue new revenue streams and efficiency improvements through collaboration with other campus service centers and auxiliary units.

    • Customer Engagement: Drive the development and execution of marketing strategies to attract and retain internal and external clients. Provide guidance and support to departments to ensure high levels of customer satisfaction for all projects and services.

    • Industry Leadership: Maintain and enhance the department’s standing within the industry by staying engaged with professional associations and adhering to best practices. Represent the department on campus committees and working groups, as well as in external professional settings.

    Qualifications:

    Experience: Minimum of 10 years in progressively responsible roles within a large business unit, with at least 5 years in a senior supervisory role, demonstrating expertise in managing commercial operations and leading large teams. Experience in a university setting is desirable.

    Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Management, Logistics, or a related field is required. An MBA or equivalent advanced degree is desirable.

    Skills:

    • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office and various project/job management software.

    • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

    • Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects in a fast-paced environment.

    • Knowledge of printing, copying, mail/logistics, and intelligent locker systems for packages is desirable.

    • Proven track record in creating and executing strategic visions and solving complex problems.

    Leadership: Demonstrated ability to create a supportive and developmental atmosphere for staff, fostering both personal and professional growth.

    DIRECTOR, MIT Copytech, the institute’s much-loved on-campus printing center, is the place where staff, faculty and students come for their printing needs. Now, in the ever-evolving business landscape, we seek an innovative leader who can help reimagine what MIT Copytech can and should be as we look towards the future. In addition to responsibility for day-to-day operation of the center, fiscal performance and staffing, the Director will: maintain an effective cost recovery operation; work closely with managers to determine center improvements involving equipment, software and new services; lead regular evaluations of services and pricing; oversee a highly diverse staff; work with financial officer to establish annual budget and to determine and forecast performance goals; and work closely with staff to develop exceptional customer service protocols.

    REQUIREMENTS: The leader we seek has experience spearheading organizational change; the knowledge to develop emerging product and service directions; the ability to gracefully manage a diverse staff and client base; and an unwavering commitment to customer service and satisfaction. The ideal candidate will also have strong management, finance and busines operations experience. Proficiency with digital print technologies including, black/white and color production, imprinting, 3-D, large format and electronic messaging. Knowledge of the print equipment acquisition process required. Knowledge of graphic design preferred. Experience in cost recovery operations would be a plus. Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of relevant print center management experience or Associate’s degree and 10 years of print center supervisory experience.
